One year between shop and squat
On 30 October 1987 Firma J. A. van Duyn, the last furniture shop, advertised its closing-down sale. In February 1989 a newspaper agenda placed the Paleis Toneel Theater at the same address, under the venue name Duinpaleis.
After the furniture shop
The sale advertisement does not say when the firm left the building, and no source we hold names . The February agenda then shows the Paleis Toneel Theater advertising Puinpaleis at Duinpaleis, Rochussenstraat 169.
Puinpaleis, February
A Rotterdam newspaper's Saturday listings advertised Puinpaleis by the Paleis Toneel Theater for 2:30 pm on Sunday 5 February 1989, at Duinpaleis, Rochussenstraat 169.
"2:00 pm Library Theatre, Hoogstraat 110, tel. 010-4338258. 'Puinpaleis' by Paleis Toneel Theater, Sun. 2:30 pm, Duinpaleis, Rochussenstraat 169, tel. 4766826"
The listing for the Library Theatre on the Hoogstraat appears immediately above it. The second entry names the show and company and gives its time and address. The UvA theatre catalogue probably identifies the show as Puinpaleis: deel 1: In de eetkamer, a youth-theatre production with a premiere date of 5 February; it lists Erik-Ward Geerlings among the performers.
A December cabaret
In December 1989 a newspaper agenda advertised two shows billed to De Pragmatici. One was the late-night cabaret Het obscene eekhoorntje (the obscene little squirrel), the other the afternoon family production De dame en de neushoorn (the lady and the rhinoceros).
Repeated listing (appears near the top of the crop and under "SATURDAY 16 DECEMBER"): > "DUINPALEIS, Rochussenstraat 169, tel. 010-4766826. The obscene little squirrel, cabaret by de Pragmatici, 11:30 pm, ƒ 5." Under "SUNDAY 17 DECEMBER": > "DUINPALEIS, Rochussenstraat 169, tel. 010-4766826. The lady and the rhinoceros by de Pragmatici, 4:00 pm, ages 6 and up, ƒ 5."
The agenda shows only what was advertised, not whether either performance went ahead.
The same building in 1994
Nothing in the sources shows theatre use running through 1989, or between 1989 and the building's next recorded use as a venue. By 12 January 1994 the music venue Dodorama was already using the same building. The exact date when one use ended and the other began is still unknown.
