For close to half a century Firma J. A. van Duyn sold furniture, carpets and fabrics from Rochussenstraat 169; its commercial-register dossier runs from 1938 to 1987. The firm ended with a closing-down sale in 1987, and the digitised-press sweep recorded for it found no public notice of what came next. Its Handelsregister dossier, not yet consulted, may record the date and manner of closure. In the meantime the advertisements, decade by decade, show how the firm described itself to the city.

From the flat upstairs to the shop below

Johan Andries van Duijn, whose name went up over the shop, did not start in furniture. When his son was born at Sophiakade 40a in December 1912, he was twenty-seven and gave his trade as kantoorbediende, an office clerk; he built the furniture business later in life. He reached the shop from the flat above it. The household of J. A. van Duijn had lived at 169b since December 1931. In January 1936 the interlocal telephone directory shows that household at 169b and Furnishco at 169a sharing the building, with van Duyn already on the 30047 line. The 1932 directory lists J. A. van Duyn as a director of that earlier firm, which the commercial-register notices do not independently confirm, so the identification is probable. It does not establish ownership, succession or a continuous business, and that remains . The surname comes in two spellings and both are kept here: the civil records write van Duijn, while the firm printed its name as van Duyn.

The firm itself appears in the late 1930s. By 1938 the directory entered J. A. van Duyn's own wholesale business at 169, Meub., tapijten en stoffen en gros, on the 30047 line:

That March a classified under the same name had given the address, though a private notice of that kind does not on its own put the firm at the corner. The firm's paid advertising is firmer ground. The earliest advertisement traced appeared in De Maasbode on 10 October 1939: Rochussenstraat 169, telephone 30047, and an invitation to come and see its model rooms:

The same year the firm bought a display block in the Rotterdam address book for its toonkamers, showrooms of furniture, carpets and fabrics. A few columns away, the plain list of names still entered a J. A. van Duijn at 169b as an office clerk. That entry most likely repeats the old kantoorbediende description rather than the furniture trade, and the record cannot resolve whether it means the founder or his son of the same name:

By 7 November 1939 the firm was advertising its wholesale showrooms in the same terms. The number 30047 stayed with the firm into the 1960s; it then changed twice, to 254992 by May 1967 and to 762833 by March 1977; the closing advertisement of October 1987 printed it as 010-4762833, and has a deep dive of its own.

Through the war, and after

The firm stayed at the corner through the occupation, and one question about those years needs a separate, exact answer. No evidence has been located that links any firm at no. 169 to the Möbelaktion, the seizure of Jewish household goods. That is a documented absence of evidence, not an exoneration, and sets out the case. The surviving advertisements resume in January 1947, on the same 30047 line. The gap by itself cannot show why advertisements are absent, or whether the shop stood empty:

The shop, and what it sold

Ships and hotels came later; first the corner was a furniture shop, and what it sold can be followed from 1950. That April it was selling design. An advertisement set the firm's name in a white script logotype above the claim that onze meubelen, tapijten en gordijnstoffen stood out door vorm en dessin, by form and pattern:

In August 1951 the stock is named for the first time. The window held Prachtige Barok en Chippendale meubelen, splendid Baroque and Chippendale furniture, and the firm was running two telephone lines, printed as 30047-31805:

De Maasbode, 1951/08/11 00:00:00, pagina 5 (full page)KB Delpher (De Maasbode) · MMKB15:000563030:mpeg21:a00070 (04-08-1951); MMKB15:000563036:mpeg21:a00046 (11-08-1951)Open the original ↗

That taste held for the rest of the firm's life. The 1951 window, the betere klassieke genre its salesmen were expected to know in 1969, and the klassieke meubelen van topklasse of the 1987 closing sale form one continuous self-image. The name above the stock changed with the trade's vocabulary: plain Fa. J. A. van Duyn in 1964, Woninginrichting by the later 1960s, Interieurverzorging in January 1969 and Meubelen en Tapijten by that December. Its job advertisements changed too, asking for upholsterers through the 1960s and, by 1977, for a furnisher who also held a driving licence. A 1961 classified stated the firm's line plainly, Fa. J. A. van Duyn, Scheepsstoffering en Woninginrichting, ship-upholstery and home-furnishing in one:

> We can still place a few skilled > (home) upholsterers > Fa. J. A. van Duyn, Ship's upholstery and Home furnishing, Rochussenstraat 169, Rotterdam, Telephone 38105—30047.

The people it wanted to hire tell the same story about what it sold. In May 1964 it advertised for a first-class salesman who could give its clients the service they were used to:

> A [HOME] FURNISHERS IN ROTTERDAM seeks, to start soon, a first-class salesman capable of offering our > clients the service they are used to from us. Excellent terms for the right man. Applications please by > telephone appointment. > FA. J. A VAN DUYN > Rochussenstraat 169 — Telephone 30047 — Rotterdam

Five years on it was asking for much the same. An Interieurverzorging notice of January 1969 sought an experienced furniture salesman, fully at home in furnishing in the better classical genre:

> Firma J. A. VAN DUYN > Interior Furnishing, ROCHUSSENSTRAAT 169, ROTTERDAM > We should like to make contact shortly with an active and experienced FURNITURE SALESMAN who is fully > conversant with how things are done in home furnishing in the better classical genre. > Written applications [to the above address].

From the street the shop looked the part. In February 1965 the Stadsarchief photographed its signage from across a busy junction full of small cars. The whole three-line legend can be read: PULLMAN MATRASSEN along the top, J. A. van DUYN on the fascia, MEUBELEN (TAPIJTEN) below. The photograph is a rights-reserved Beeldbank image (catalogue 26983), so it is described here rather than reproduced.

What went into the window also went into the paper, and the product advertisements spell out the taste piece by piece. The NRC of 8 December 1972 showed Een Pronkstuk, a columned cabinet in oak and palissander. On 30 March 1973 came an Eiken aanbouwwand, an oak modular wall-unit, and on 4 May 1973 a stijlwandmeubel met allure in flower-figured mahogany. On 18 August 1976 the firm offered an Exclusieve beeldenkast, geheel met de hand vervaardigd, an exclusive hand-made display cabinet; the advertisement does not say whether it was made on the premises, and this deep dive does not assume so. In April 1971 the firm was displaying what it called its new CHERRY WOOD collection, naming the furniture by its timber, in English, rather than by a period style. That house line was already in print earlier: a display advertisement of March 1969 placed an engraving of an antique fall-front bureau under a slogan, above the firm's name and its 254992 telephone line:

> Period / style furniture – suited to any interior > [engraving of an antique fall-front bureau / secretaire] > FIRM J. A. VAN DUYN > Rochussenstraat 169 Rotterdam · Telephone 254992

What it furnished

The firm worked well beyond its shop window. In 1950 it furnished the interior of the Oud-Rotterdam attraction, and it did scheepsstoffering, the soft furnishing of ships. The flagship was its proudest commission. For the Holland-Amerika Lijn's new ss Rotterdam of 1959, van Duyn's own advertisement that August said it had supplied many carpets and curtains:

> Advertisement > Many carpets and curtains we > supplied for the new > d.s.s. "ROTTERDAM" > FIRM J. A. van DUYN > HOME FURNISHING — SHIP FURNISHING/UPHOLSTERY > ROCHUSSENSTRAAT 169 - ROTTERDAM - TELEPHONE 30047

Four years later it dressed a landmark on land. A paid, inserted announcement for the new Rotterdam Hilton credited van Duyn as Interieur Adviseurs for carpets, curtains, beds, spreads, bolsters and plastic wall-covering:

> (Inserted announcement / advertisement) > HILTON HOTEL in Rotterdam > To the Interior Advisers > FIRM J. A. On the same day De Nijs' Meubelfabriek advertised that it had furnished two hundred guest rooms. Each notice states its own share of the work; together they do not add up to a complete division of every room or interior task.

The closing, and the silence after

In 1973, fourteen years before it closed, the firm advertised that it traded uitsluitend Rochussenstraat 169a, only from that one house-letter, on telephone 254992. The founder, Johan Andries van Duijn, died in January 1978, and his son B. A. van Duijn ran the firm to its end. The notice his own staff placed for him gave the firm's name the way it had always given it, Woninginrichting en Scheepsstoffering, Firma J. A. van Duijn, Rochussenstraat 169: an insider's description, the two trades in one line.

The end was a clearance. From 30 October to 5 November 1987, after some forty-nine years at the corner, van Duyn held an opheffingsuitverkoop, a closing-down sale, of klassieke meubelen van topklasse at up to fifty per cent off. In the recorded digitised-press sweep, its largest and last advertisement ran in the Algemeen Dagblad of 5 November 1987, forty-nine years after the name first appears at the address:

> CLOSING-DOWN SALE > Fa. J. A. van Duyn > classical furniture of the highest class > up to 50% DISCOUNT > Rochussenstraat 169 Rotterdam > 010-4762833
Algemeen Dagblad, 5 November 1987, page not recorded (advertisement), “Fa. J. A. van Duyn — final closing-down-sale advertisement, Algemeen Dagblad 5 November 1987” · Open the original ↗

The municipal records also hold a 1987 Bestemmingswijziging, a change-of-use entry. The recorded 2026 sweep of digitised newspapers found the sale, but no notice of a successor, a buyer or a continuation after it. Those sources do not say whether the firm was wound up, sold or simply stopped.

What is on file, and what is only a name

The Rotterdam commercial register holds the firm as J. A. van Duyn, dossier 24049735 in the series of lapsed dossiers, and that file, not yet consulted, may give the date and manner of closure. It has no digital copy; the only ways in are a visit to the archive reading room or a request for a reproduction. One tempting near-miss also needs a ruling. A present-day Rotterdam firm, Van Duijn Projektinrichting B.V., has the same surname and once listed the same unusual ship-outfitting trade in its own register description. It was registered in May 1988, however, some seven months after the closing sale, in a different line of work, and no transfer between the two firms is documented; the shared surname therefore stays an open question, not a proven line of descent.
